The Columbia International Festival
Context
The Columbia International Festival is one of the largest cultural events in the Southeast, bringing together communities, performers, exhibitors, and attendees from around the world to celebrate international culture, food, and traditions.
What began as a single annual event grew into a regional institution requiring communication across numerous audiences, stakeholders, media channels, and promotional platforms.
In 2011, I was brought in to support the production of a television commercial promoting the festival. At the time, the assignment was straightforward: help increase awareness and encourage attendance.
Neither side knew that project would become the beginning of a fifteen-year creative partnership.
The Challenge
The challenge was never simply creating advertisements.
As the festival grew, so did the complexity of communicating it.
Each year required coordination across television, radio, billboards, print materials, digital media, event technology, social platforms, and public-facing communications. New opportunities created new communication demands. New channels created new expectations.
The question gradually shifted from:
“How do we promote this year’s event?”
to:
“How do we consistently communicate the value of the festival across an expanding number of audience touchpoints?”
Maintaining clarity and consistency became just as important as generating awareness.
The Approach
Rather than viewing each project as a separate assignment, I approached the relationship as an ongoing communication partnership.
Every new initiative became an opportunity to build context.
Every campaign provided insight into the audience.
Every year increased understanding of the organization’s goals, challenges, and opportunities.
This cumulative understanding allowed creative decisions to become more strategic over time. Instead of repeatedly rediscovering the organization, we were able to build upon years of shared experience and institutional knowledge.
As trust grew, responsibilities expanded.
What began with television advertising gradually evolved into broader involvement across media, communications, and technology initiatives supporting the festival.

Execution
Over the course of the partnership, responsibilities expanded to include support across numerous communication channels and audience experiences.
These efforts included:
* Television advertising
* Radio campaigns
* Billboard campaigns
* Promotional video production
* Digital communications
* Event technology support
* Audience-facing media experiences
* Multi-platform campaign development
While the deliverables changed from year to year, the underlying objective remained consistent:
Help people understand the value of the event before they ever walked through the door.
Outcome
The most meaningful outcome was not a single campaign, advertisement, or piece of media.
It was the relationship itself.
Over fifteen years, the partnership evolved from a single production assignment into trusted involvement across a broad range of communications and media initiatives.
The growth of responsibility reflected something more valuable than any individual deliverable: confidence.
Confidence that projects would be completed well.
Confidence that institutional knowledge would be retained.
Confidence that communication decisions could be made with a deep understanding of the organization’s mission, audience, and goals.
The result was not simply a collection of campaigns.
It was fifteen years of accumulated trust.
Reflection
Consistency Creates Opportunity
Many people think trust is built through exceptional moments.
In my experience, trust is more often built through consistency.
Showing up.
Solving problems.
Delivering on commitments.
Learning the organization.
Understanding the audience.
Then doing it again the following year.
What began as support for a single television commercial ultimately became a fifteen-year partnership because each project created the opportunity for the next one.
Trust compounded over time.
And so did responsibility.
